The Bushmens' material possessions are not many. Travelling lightly was necessary as they moved over great distances in search of water and food. Below are some of the items that they would need as they wander the sands of the Kalahari.
As the San take long walks through the dessert they will often take their thumb piano with them to pass the time. The piano can be tuned by adjusting the tines up and down or by adding propolis (bees wax) underneath the end of each tine to alter the pitch down.
Bushmen rely on the plants of the desert for their food and medicine. The women are rarely without a gathering bag. These bags are created from leather from steenboks and duikers, small antelopes. They are decorated with beads of glass or ostrich eggshell.
The skins of small antelopes are decorated with beads and worn by women as clothing. In Western homes they are used only as a decoration on a wall or a table.
